Overview

The main goal of this project was to act as a liaison between product teams and the design system group to improve how Pulse Design System was used across the company. I worked directly with teams to validate their component needs while providing management with clear analytics on adoption, common issues, and areas for improvement. A big part of my role was addressing the perception that using a standardized system adds build time by showing teams how it actually creates more scalable and efficient workflows.

My Contributions

When I started this role, CVS Health's global design system Pulse the adoption was at 60%, which led to a lot of rework and overly complex design solutions. I focused on closing that gap by partnering with product teams to identify exactly where core components could strengthen their specific projects. I found that cards, list groups, and choice buttons offered the biggest opportunities for improvement. To support this, I facilitated regular review sessions in which teams could present new designs. I provided guidance on proper component usage and recommended solutions that met their unique needs while staying within our system standards.

Liaison and Guidance: I attended design reviews with eight core product teams to offer practical advice on how Pulse could simplify their concepts.

  • Targeted Support: I held one-on-one sessions with designers who needed extra help navigating the system.
  • Pattern Refinement: I helped teams reduce the overuse of cards by identifying more appropriate patterns for detail views and information-dense screens.
  • Technical Enablement: I collaborated with the design enablement team to develop training on slot usage and produced video walkthroughs demonstrating how to handle complex components without breaking them.

Outcome

In just a six-month pilot, I helped increase system adoption by 20% and reduce component detachments by 15%. Beyond the numbers, I helped bridge the communication gap between development and design, proving that the system is a tool for speed rather than a hurdle. The training materials and video guides I created have now become a permanent resource for onboarding new members and ensuring consistent workflows.
