Golf Channel App Design

Overview

In my role as Lead UX/UI Designer at NBC Sports Next, I spearheaded the design of the Golf Channel App, a comprehensive digital ecosystem that serves as the premier destination for golfers seeking a blend of world-class entertainment and technical instruction. My goal was to create a cohesive, "always-on" companion that elevates the sport's digital presence to a premium, subscription-grade level. The platform is architected to handle high-production long-form video, real-time editorial content, and a deep library of instructional series, providing a seamless experience across web and mobile platforms for golfers of all skill levels.

Problem Statement

The core challenge was to reconcile the disparate ways golfers consume content—shifting from the lean-back engagement of a documentary to the lean-forward intent of a technical lesson. Legacy golf platforms often felt like fragmented repositories where instructional "how-tos" were buried under news sections. I needed to solve for intellectual switching costs: how to design an interface that feels equally appropriate for watching a cinematic feature like The Tiger Woods Project and for analyzing technical golf tips. The objective was to eliminate navigation fatigue and create a unified home for the "complete golfer".

Solution

I implemented a sophisticated, media-centric design language that prioritizes visual immersion while maintaining a high degree of functional utility. Central to this solution was a robust navigation system and a versatile "Dark Mode" aesthetic that allows the vibrant colors of golf course photography to take center stage.

  • Home: A Personalized Entry Point:
I designed the Home section to serve as a task-oriented portal that adapts to user intent. It provides quick access to a mix of entertainment and instructional content, ensuring users encounter a familiar, predictable interface that reinforces brand trust.

  • Watch: Immersive Entertainment:
The Watch section features high-quality video streaming for documentaries and entertainment. It utilizes a "Dark Mode" aesthetic for optimal readability and eye comfort, whether the user is watching features at home or on the go.

  • myGolf: Tailored Technical Instruction:
I developed the myGolf section to host a deep library of structured instructional content, such as the Foley Factor. This section utilizes a clear information hierarchy to make technical tips digestible and actionable, helping golfers improve their game at their own pace.

Outcome

The resulting Golf Channel App experience successfully integrated high-end entertainment with daily utility, serving as a benchmark in sports media design. By moving to a task-oriented framework and a clear five-tab navigation system, we significantly streamlined the user’s path to discovery—whether they are finding a documentary or starting a new instructional course. The platform now serves as a high-performance engine for engagement, offering a professional, authoritative, and deeply engaging environment that scales across all user touchpoints.
